The terms Indian HR teams confuse most
Each definition below is written to stand on its own, without needing the rest of the page for context.
- HRMS vs HRIS vs HCM — an HRIS stores employee records and core HR data. An HRMS adds transactional processing such as payroll, attendance, and leave. HCM is the broadest term, adding talent, performance, and workforce planning on top.
- CTC vs gross salary vs in-hand salary — CTC is the employer’s total annual cost including employer PF and gratuity provisions. Gross salary is earnings before deductions. In-hand salary is what reaches the bank account after PF, professional tax, and TDS.
- Basic pay — basic pay is the fixed core of a salary structure and the base on which PF, gratuity, and several allowances are calculated, which is why changing it changes statutory cost.
- ATS vs ESS — an applicant tracking system (ATS) manages candidates through the hiring pipeline. An employee self-service portal (ESS) lets existing employees handle payslips, leave, and declarations without HR involvement.
- KRA vs KPI vs OKR — a KRA is an area of responsibility. A KPI is a metric that measures performance in that area. An OKR is a time-boxed objective with measurable key results, usually set quarterly.
- Attrition vs retention — attrition measures the share of employees who leave over a period. Retention measures the share who stay. They are complements, not independent metrics.
